OHS STUDENTS HELP ESPN ASUN BROADCASTS

Oxford High School media students, better known as “Jacket Media,” can now add a line to their resumes not available to many at their grade level.

“Worked for ESPN.”

The sports network’s video streaming service is in town at Choccolocco Park, broadcasting the ASUN softball tournament, and they are getting help from the OHS students.

“Two students are serving as time-out/instant replay coordinators,” explained city IT coordinator Mark Hale, who helped coordinate the necessary technology for the broadcasts. “There is a student on the third-base camera, four working the video boards, a few who are runners, and two students in the production room.”

OHS Media instructor Eric Freeman said having this opportunity is something the students have embraced and “want to stay as long as they can to help.”

“I have told our kids that being given this opportunity shows how much the school and this city care about you,” Freeman said. “I keep telling them how great a job they are doing – and it’s on ESPN!”

Autumn Kimbry is one of the students who donned headphones and helped communicate the cues for Thursday’s broadcast.

“They give me a cue in my headphones when they are ready to play, and I give the umpires a ‘thumbs up,’” Kimbry explained.

“I never thought I would be working for ESPN,” she added. “This is a really cool opportunity.”
