Historic Main Street Oxford launched the Downtown Historic Plaque Project in the fall of 2023 to celebrate and preserve the stories of Oxford’s historic downtown.
The project recognizes significant landmarks by highlighting their architectural style, era of construction, and historical importance. These plaques connect the past to the present, making Oxford’s history a visible and meaningful part of the community.
The information below expands on the plaques with images and additional historical context. Since its launch, 30 downtown buildings—constructed between the 1850s and 1969—have been marked with bronze plaques, showcasing a wide variety of architectural styles and contributing to the unique character of downtown Oxford.
This project has been made possible through the help of several dedicated volunteers: Connie Freeman, Hunter Gentry, Zachary Grizzard, Jeff Long, Shirley Mellon Dewberry, Julie Skinner Mangham, and Gwen Parrish.
Funding for the plaques was provided by Historic Main Street Oxford, a department of the City of Oxford.
