FAMILIES CATCH A FUN TIME AT FISHING RODEO

The hot temperatures did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds who ringed Choccolocco Lake during the inaugural Kids’ Fishing Rodeo held Saturday, June 22, at Choccolocco Park.

Kids, parents, and pets from across the region all enjoyed spending time together as they grabbed their fishing gear and plunked their hooks in the water hoping to catch some of the 2,000 pounds of catfish which had been placed in the lake prior to the rodeo.

Those kids who came without gear could still experience the fun of fishing thanks to the generous donations of sponsors who made sure no child had a day without being able to cast a hook from their own free rod and reel.

Even those who don’t fish enjoyed the hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the summer fixings which were provided for free. The opportunity to work off the extra calories came by walking the lake’s perimeter or taking some jumps in the bounce houses.

The Oxford Fire Department was also there, providing a misting tent to cool things down.

Event organizer and Oxford businessman Thomas Shelton called the day a success and said thoughts are already focusing on how to make the rodeo better for next year.
