Domino’s Pizza opened its new Oxford location at 1707 Hamric Drive East during a special ribbon – and pizza - cutting held Monday, Sept. 9, 2024.
Co-owner David Dawoud expressed his appreciation to the city for their assistance as the popular pizza outlet found the need to move from its former location across the street to its own free-standing location.
Dawoud and co-owner Waleed Ghabayen began delivering pizzas in Oxford in 1990 when they were college students.
“After college, we got a franchise in Birmingham, but always dreamed of acquiring the Oxford/Anniston market which we already knew like the back of our hand,” Dawoud said.
Dawoud and Ghabayen acquired the local franchise 15 years ago after other franchise owners faced difficulties under the shadow of the Ft. McClellan closing.
“We took the challenge and always believed in Oxford where we started,” he said.
Taking that challenge has paid off as the co-owners now operate in their new facility with a $1.8 million investment - a new, airy, and colorful location with 40 employees, the latest technology, and a goal of $2.5 million in sales.
“I know we can do it, thanks to this city and all they have done to help us with all our tax, construction, and engineering issues,” Dawoud said. “They were always here helping us out.”
Dawoud said they look forward to being of help to the Oxford schools as part of giving back to the community.
He also paid an emotional tribute to his general manager, Jamie Zelsdorf, who he said “was the reason we are here and is now one of the top managers in the country.”
Mayor Alton Craft welcomed the co-owners “back home to Oxford” as they start this new chapter in their business.
“We’re glad you’re back,” Craft said while noting restaurant sales make up one-tenth of the city’s sales tax revenue. “We appreciate you choosing to come back here, and we are here for you if we can do anything else to help.”
Craft then joined Fire Chief Gary Sparks in donning personalized cooking aprons and heading to the production line, having some fun in trying out their skills at pizza making.
