The Oxford Fire Department is built upon 141 years of passion, duty, and responsibility to take care of their neighbors.
Having morphed from a group of volunteers to a full force of fully trained and equipped professionals, the OFD spends a great deal of effort in not having to perform their main duty of fighting fires.
An active, vibrant, and record-breaking program to inspect and install smoke detectors has set records in concert with the availability for citizens to have their gas units checked for potential hazards.
Through appearances at sporting events, parades, and other special civic occasions, the OFD is there not only to reinforce everyone’s safety but also to provide important information to families on how to better protect their homes and lives from fire disasters.
Marshal – Paw Patrol and Sparky the Fire Dog, the OFD mascots, provide that same information, with some hugs, in a way that is fun and engaging for youngsters.
They even take charge of the July 4th fireworks show so no one ruins their holiday exposing themselves to the potential dangers of creating those spectacular patriotic skyscapes.
The OFD also adds new firefighters to the Oxford ranks, and to many other communities, with their fire science program at Oxford High School, and offering firefighter training and certifications through participation in the Alabama Fire College’s Bridge program.
However, the Oxford Fire Department stands ready to answer the call when a fire is reported - as well as a car accident, a chemical hazard, a water rescue, and scenarios which are almost unthinkable.
A force of 47 full-time firefighters - which includes 16 paramedics, 2 advanced EMTs, and 18 EMT-basics - bring with them the latest training, skills, technologies, and a fleet of specialized vehicles to any crisis whether it be manning the hoses on a house fire or using the “Jaws of Life” to extricate a person from a wrecked vehicle. All their tasks are done with a foundation of the same compassion – taking care of their neighbors – that was embedded within the department 141 years ago.
“I will put our fire department up against any other,” said Mayor Alton Craft. “I have watched them train, and I don’t know how they do it when it’s 105 degrees and they are in their gear. They are a remarkable group of folks who continue to grow, and do even more for our city as they are always a call away when we need them for anything. I really appreciate our firefighters.”
Professionalism plus compassion equals the Oxford Fire Department, helping to make the city of Oxford into Alabama at its best!
