Oxford Athletes Represent Alabama at the National Senior Games

The City of Oxford, Alabama, is sending a dynamic duo to the National Senior Games this summer, showcasing the growing popularity and talent within its local Table Tennis and Pickleball communities.

Mike Harris and Kip Chappell will be traveling to Des Moines, Iowa, from July 30th to August 3rd to compete on a national stage.

For some time, both men have been instrumental in growing the sport of Pickleball within Calhoun County. As Ambassadors, they’ve been actively involved in expanding access to the sport, advocating for new courts, and providing invaluable support to players of all levels. From assisting with equipment selection to leading “Pickleball 101” training sessions, they’ve fostered a welcoming and thriving environment for newcomers and seasoned players alike.

Their commitment extends beyond Pickleball. Harris and Chappell also qualified for the National Senior Games in both Table Tennis and Tennis, a remarkable achievement that demonstrates their versatility and athleticism. The National Senior Games, held every two years, require athletes to compete in qualifying tournaments the year prior – a challenge both men successfully met in 2024.

In Iowa, Harris and Chappell will be competing in Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles in both Table Tennis and Pickleball. While they qualified for Tennis as well, scheduling conflicts will prevent them from participating in all three sports. Nevertheless, their packed schedule demonstrates their commitment to maximizing their opportunities at the Games.

They won’t be traveling alone. Several other players from Oxford Table Tennis and 256-Pickleball will be joining them, creating a strong contingent representing the region. This collaborative spirit underscores the supportive atmosphere within these local organizations.

The entire community of Oxford will be cheering them on as they represent the Great State of Alabama on the national stage.
