Oxford Fire Department to perform fire safety neighborhood surveys Free service is part of National Fire Prevention Month
By Brian Graves
October 2, 2025

Members of the Oxford Fire Department are looking forward to serving you now in a good way to prevent having to serve you on what could be your worst day.
Oxford firefighters will be canvassing neighborhoods offering free advice and help in making homes safe from fire hazards as part of National Fire Prevention Week October 6-10, 2025.
The OFD will begin the week with a three-day “Smoke Alarm Blitz,” which will begin each day at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6; Tuesday, Oct. 7; and Wednesday, Oct. 8 as firefighters go out into local neighborhoods to shake hands, offer free smoke alarm installations, and make themselves available to answer any questions about home safety.
The communities scheduled to be visited during the three days are: Pace Street; Pace Circle; Preston Street; Lott Drive; Lewis Drive; Clearview Drive; Fox Hill Street; Deerfield Circle; Deerfield Lane; Setter Lane; Twin Oaks Drive; Hunter Drive; Dearmanville Drive South; Knoxville Circle; Knoxville Lane; Knoxville Road; Eden Place; Frances Boulevard; Virginia Avenue South; Edwin Avenue; and Geraldine Avenue.
If your neighborhood is not on the list or for some reason you will not be at home during canvassing times, you may call the Oxford Fire Department at 256-831-3208.
The special week is the start of an entire month of fire prevention education which will include visits to all the Oxford schools by OFD mascots Marshal-Paw Patrol and Sparky the Fire Dog to provide youngsters with home safety information in a fun and engaging way.
National Fire Prevention Week has been a national observance since 1925 and is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire on Oct. 8, 1871.
The theme of this year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-ion Batteries in Your Home,” stresses the importance of buying, charging, and recycling safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.
