City Council honors Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks on his retirement

City Council honors Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks on his retirement

The Oxford City Council passed a unanimous resolution during its meeting on January 13, 2026, bestowing the title of Fire Chief Emeritus on Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks.

The resolution also authorized the fire department’s newest mobile unit, to be placed into service later this year, to bear the name “Chief Gary Sparks” as a “working tribute to his years of devoted service and a continuing inspiration to generations of firefighters that will follow.”

Sparks, who was the city’s first full-time fire chief serving for 19 years, will retire on February 1, 2026.

During the honors, Sparks was surrounded by his family and a council chamber filled with many of Oxford’s current firefighters who have served under Sparks’ leadership.

Sparks was also presented with a special commendation from the Oxford Police Department by Oxford Police Chief/Director of Public Safety Bill Partridge in tribute to his “distinguished and faithful service to the city of Oxford and his exemplary leadership, unwavering dedication, and steadfast commitment to public safety.”

“It’s been a good run,” Sparks said. “I’ve always been told that you’ll know when it’s time, and it’s time.”

Sparks paid tribute to Oxford’s current team of “fantastic firefighters” and noted that they put their lives on the line every day.

“These guys are wonderful,” Sparks said.

“I’m going to miss coming to work,” he added. “That’s all I’ve done since I was 15 years old. But, I’m going to enjoy [my grandchildren]. I’m a phone call away if there is anything I can do to help. There is no doubt I love the city of Oxford.”
