A decades-old icon of Oxford dining has officially transitioned to new management, which is adamant that there is no reason to change what everyone already likes.
Brad’s Bar-B-Que held an official ceremony on Friday, March 13, 2026, marking the change at its familiar Oxford location at 1809 US-78.
New owner Joel Laird was joined by his sons, Rick and Stokes, for the special occasion.
Laird purchased the restaurant from William Bradford and his family, who have operated Brad’s since 1988, and plans to keep both the employees and the process that has made it one of the area’s favorite eateries.
Brad’s has become well-known for its pulled pork, ribs, and Southern side dishes including fried okra, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese, with dine-in and takeout options.
Friday’s event became a dual celebration as the day was also Bradford’s 84th birthday.
Oxford City Council president said when he first heard the Bradford family was planning on closing the restaurant, he was “saddened because this is not only a great restaurant, but you’re great people.”
“I appreciate what you have done and I appreciate Judge Laird for taking this opportunity to make the investment,” Spurlin continued. “I think it will be very successful for you as you are combining great food and great people.”
“From the Laird family to the Bradford family, thank you all for taking a chance on us,” Laird said. “Thank you for not only trusting us with the legacy you have built here, but also for your good name because we’re keeping it Brad’s Bar-B-Que. It’s not Laird’s Bar-B-Que. We are blessed you chose us and have stayed with us for the time that you have spent and will spend helping us continue the tradition you established with the same recipes, the same food, the same quality, and the same service for the people in this area and people travelling through this area.”
Joining Spurlin in the official honors were Historic Main Street Oxford director Hunter Gentry, Calhoun County Commissioners Danny Shears and Terry Howell, state Sen. Keith Kelley, and Shea Miller representing U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers.
“This restaurant is a landmark for this community,” Kelley said. “I’m glad we have it in our city and it’s continuing forward.”
Brad’s Bar-B-Que is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Brad’s can be reached by phone at 256-831-7878.
