Model City Trykes rides into Oxford

Model City Trykes rides into Oxford

Model City Trykes, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing mobility options to children of all ages with physical or developmental challenges, held a formal ribbon-cutting on Monday, May 18, 2026, at its 1716 Hamric Drive East, Suite 4, location. The ceremony was provided by the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce.

Model City Trykes is the Oxford chapter of AMBUCS,  a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization empowering children with special needs throughout the nation. They provide Amtryke adaptive tricycles — uniquely engineered for individuals of all ages with physical or developmental challenges — to help every child ride, play, and thrive.

“It’s for the children,” said Kim Bentley, local chapter president and owner of Steadfast Physical Therapy which is located next door and whose staff plays an integral part in what Model City Trykes does. “This has been a long time coming and we’ve been working on this for a while. We have just fallen in love with these kids.”

Model City Trykes works to reduce the high cost of adaptive tricycles so families are not overwhelmed by another major expense. These specialized tricycles can be costly, and many families are already managing significant medical bills. To help ease this burden, funds are raised through community donors, grants, and individuals who believe in this mission. Every contribution helps make these life-changing tricycles more accessible for children who need them.

Gordon Shaw, AMBUCS national president, was on hand for the special event.

“I want to thank everybody for being here today,” Shaw said. “It’s great to see the community out here with this new chapter. We provide mobility and, looking at this, we’re going to provide a lot of mobility here in Oxford.”

Oxford Police Chief Daniel Phipps, along with other members of the police department, helped provide a safe outdoor space for the three children who were given their new specialized rides during the event to enjoy their new set of wheels.
