Oxford City Schools Opens New School Year with a Reminder of Possibilities and Opportunities

Oxford City Schools officially kicked off the 2026-27 school year on Wednesday, August 5, with its annual opening initiative at the Oxford Performing Arts Center, celebrating the opportunities available to students and the important role educators play in their success.

Teachers were welcomed by the Oxford High School Cheer Team and the "Sound of Champions" Band before enjoying the Oxford City Schools Education Foundation's annual Breakfast of Champions. Foundation Executive Director Judy Muncher said the breakfast was made possible through the generous support of McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Southern Girl Coffee. She also announced a new initiative that will provide teacher grants each semester beginning this school year.

The program highlighted the many opportunities available to Oxford students through academics, arts, athletics, leadership, career pathways, and extracurricular activities. In a presentation titled Where Every Student Has a Place, dozens of students filled the stage to represent the more than 100 programs and activities offered throughout the school system. Many students participate in multiple programs, demonstrating the district's commitment to helping every student explore their interests and reach their potential.

Board of Education President Dr. Tony Bolton thanked teachers for the lasting impact they have on students, reminding them that while lessons may be forgotten, students will always remember the teachers who believed in them.

Mayor Alton Craft also encouraged educators as they prepared to welcome students back to the classroom. "You are part of our children's lives now," Craft said. "Starting tomorrow, you will change their lives and the lives of their children's children. It's a big responsibility. I think about you all the time, and I pray for you."

Superintendent Dr. Todd Haynie challenged faculty and staff to recognize the difference they can make in every student's life through compassion, patience, and relationships
