Walmart Supercenter celebrates renovated Oxford location

Walmart Supercenter brought the energy as it celebrated the store’s renovation on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Among the changes Walmart customers will notice are: wider aisles and updated layouts; new and expanded displays and assortments; expanded pickup and delivery services, including express delivery options; and refreshed interiors and exteriors with modern signage.

Customers were greeted by the Oxford Fire Department’s large display of the American Flag before entering the store through a phalanx of Yellow Jacket cheerleaders, who encouraged visitors and Walmart associates to dance to the grooves of a D.J. and the fight songs of the Oxford High “Sound of Champions” pep band.

Oxford’s Yellow Jacket mascot was joined by fellow classic mascot, Tony the Tiger, in posing for pictures and helping encourage the excitement of the moment.

No one left empty-handed, as Walmart offered free swag bags, and several popular name-brand products available at the store provided free samples for the taking.

Walmart store manager Adam Careng began the ceremony, marking the newest chapter in the 41-year history of the chain’s store number 809, and recognizing the efforts of the 400 “strong associates” who work there.

Oxford City Council president Chris Spurlin accepted the invitation to offer the blessing for the store and its associates, and paramedic Carla Jones of Oxford Health Systems sang the National Anthem.

Mayor Alton Craft shared the story of the late Walmart founder, Sam Walton, visiting Oxford in search of a location for his newest store. Craft also praised the community involvement of Oxford’s Walmart, especially when a crisis hits the area.

“The night this store and its associates told me who you were was in March 2018, when a major tornado hit and destroyed a lot of Jacksonville,” Craft recalled. “I decided that as soon as Oxford was secured, we would send our first responders to help. I had been told they would need food, water, and other essentials. Walmart got in touch with me to offer help. I put them in touch with our first responders, who set up in the Jacksonville Walmart parking lot. Within moments of setting up, Walmart managers and associates from Oxford arrived. That’s what this Walmart does, and we thank you for being a partner with the city of Oxford. You are very special.”
