Rubato is Oxford’s international musical grace note

The youth of the world now set their sights on Oxford as a destination to bring their talents to the Rubato International Piano Competition in Classical and Jazz.

With its debut competition in 2022, the Rubato International Piano Competition has helped propel dozens of talented young pianists from around the world further into the spotlight. Uniquely consisting of competitions in both classical and jazz music, Rubato offers competitors and fans an exciting twist on a highly competitive event, wrapped in the hometown feel that Oxford provides.

The competition also holds the high prestige of having the premier piano company in the world, Steinway & Sons, as an official partner.

More than 30 pianists from across the country and around the world – from as far away as China and Australia – have graced the Oxford Performing Arts Center stage during its first two years of competition and are judged and taught by some of the world’s most renowned piano instructors.

Rubato switched to a biennial competition beginning with its first biennial gala in 2024, featuring past gold medal winners.

Founded by OPAC director of music education Julio Barreto, Rubato’s 2025 competition is scheduled for August 12-16 at OPAC with tickets for the semifinals and finals now available at the OPAC box office and online at oxrfordpac.org.

This year’s finals will also hold the distinction of being filmed for a special documentary by Alabama Public Television, produced by students from the Oxford High School Jacket Media program, and will be made available to public television stations across the country.

“I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I can watch their hands as they play, and they are so talented,” said Mayor Alton Craft. “I am always excited to hear them perform, and it is very dear to my heart to see what these young people bring to Oxford. Having them here is a jewel in our crown.”

This unique international musical program is another event that shows Oxford is Alabama at its best!
