City Council recognizes special people, occasions

The Oxford City Council took time during their session on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, to give recognition for hard work and honor upcoming special days.

Historic Main Street Oxford director Hunter Gentry presented the Main Street Hero Award to the City of Oxford Maintenance Department for their extraordinary contribution to their community and unwavering support of Historic Main Street Oxford.

“Justin Abernathy, Mason Yates, and Jonathan Nelson play a vital role in maintaining city-owned properties and handling tasks such as repairing traffic lights, installing seasonal decorations, and pressure washing public areas,” Gentry said. “Their work ensures Oxford remains safe, functional, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.”

Abernathy was in attendance to accept the award on behalf of his colleagues.

A resolution was also presented to representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution, declaring the week of September 17-23, 2025, as Constitution Week, the annual national commemoration of the adoption of the U.S. Constitution.

Members of the Junior League, an organization of women encouraging women to take roles in leadership for meaningful community impact, received a resolution declaring “Find the Good Day” on September 18, 2025. The day is used to encourage good works for the community and each other.
