PARD combines fun and science with pollinator event
By Brian Graves
September 22, 2025

Oxford Parks and Recreation joined a nationwide event on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as they hosted “Pollinators in Focus,” part of the National Recreation and Parks Association’s “Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz,” a campaign designed to raise awareness of pollinator species and their critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Participants were encouraged to download the free iNaturalist app and help document bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators found throughout the area. Every photo submitted during the month of September within Oxford and the surrounding areas contributed to real scientific research and conservation efforts.
Oxford PARD was the only parks and recreation department in the state of Alabama to participate and had already registered 1,700 sightings by mid-morning.
Everyone who came to Choccolocco Park to join in was treated to snacks, crafts, and activities for the family, pollinator-themed goodies, door prizes from local businesses, and interactive learning opportunities that highlight the importance of pollinators.
