Wayne Mizzell of Oxford Baseball for Youth presented a $40,000 check from the organization to support improvements at Earl Martin Park, which has drawn a record number of players this season.

The donation was received by council president Chris Spurlin and Parks and Recreation director Don Hudson during the council meeting on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

“We were able to have a surplus this year, and we wanted to donate it to the city because of their plans for improvements at Earl Martin Park,” Mizzell said. “We felt this money would be well spent by giving it to the city, which they can add to what they already have planned for improvements.”

This is the first such donation from the volunteer organization, first organized in 1960, which just concluded its biggest season ever with a record 501 players - up from 440 players last season. 

“We had a great year,” Mizzell said. “Giving this type of donation is something we are looking to do every year when we find ourselves with a surplus. Our partnership with the city is priceless. They take such great care of us, and the least we can do is give something back. We’re looking forward to the future of Oxford baseball.”
